Zilla is a folk-influenced morning raga of the Asavari family. Its simple pentatonic structure gives it a pastoral, serene quality.

Legend & Lore

Zilla is a pentatonic (audav) morning raga of the Asavari thaat whose folk origins lend it a pastoral, unadorned simplicity that distinguishes it from the more elaborate or emotionally intense morning ragas of classical tradition.

The name may derive from a regional folk tradition of North India, and the raga retains the earthy, open-air quality of rural music — evoking the sounds of the countryside awakening at dawn, the call of birds, and the unhurried movements of early morning village life.

Musically, Zilla belongs to the Asavari thaat with its characteristic komal Gandhar, komal Dhaivat, and komal Nishad, but its audav structure — omitting two notes from the full scale — gives it an openness and directness quite unlike the dense, weeping Asavari or the monumental Darbari Kanada.

The vadi Re and samvadi Pa create a melodic framework centred on the second and fifth degrees, producing a gentle, undulating quality that suits the raga's serene and slightly melancholic mood.

Zilla is most at home in lighter forms — thumri, dadra, and bhajan — where its folk-inspired character can be savoured without the expectation of elaborate structural development.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Zilla's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
