Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Legend & Lore
Yaman Kalyan is a twilight raga of great refinement that stands as one of the most nuanced variants in the Kalyan thaat family, distinguished from its parent raga Yaman by the introduction of shuddha Ma (natural fourth) alongside the teevra Ma (sharp fourth) that defines Yaman's bright, expansive character.
The raga is believed to have been crystallized within the Kirana gharana tradition, where the exploration of subtle tonal gradations and their emotional consequences was a central aesthetic principle, and it represents a deliberate enrichment of Yaman's architecture to allow for a slightly more complex, introspective dimension.
By including shuddha Ma in specific descending phrases—typically in the lower tetrachord or in passages approaching the lower Sa—the raga acquires a momentary darkening or deepening compared to pure Yaman, as if the evening sky added one additional shade of violet to its spectrum just before the stars appeared.
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of the Kirana gharana is associated with early formalization of the raga's usage, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's recordings of Yaman Kalyan are considered among the definitive interpretations of the 20th century.
The raga is also studied pedagogically alongside Yaman as an object lesson in how a single tonal addition can fundamentally alter a raga's emotional depth and identity without disrupting its foundational character.
The film song 'Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil' from the film Bees Saal Baad (1962) is often cited as drawing on Yaman Kalyan's twilight emotional palette.
