Vibhas is an ancient pentatonic raga performed before dawn. Its use of only five notes including the characteristic komal Re and Dha gives it an austere, timeless quality.

Legend & Lore

Vibhas is one of the most ancient ragas in the entire Hindustani canon, its origins traced in musicological texts including the Sangita Ratnakara of Sharngadeva (13th century CE), where it is listed among the primordial ragas that predate the systematization of the thaat framework—ragas understood not as compositions within a system but as discovered vibrations that existed before their discovery.

The raga is associated with the Brahma muhurta, the hour roughly ninety minutes before sunrise that Hindu sacred tradition identifies as the most spiritually potent period of the day, when the boundary between human consciousness and the cosmic is at its most permeable, and Vibhas's five austere notes—Sa, komal Re, Ma, Pa, komal Dha—feel less like a chosen scale and more like the natural harmonic structure of silence itself on the threshold of sound.

The complete absence of both Ga and Ni means the raga lacks both the note that most defines harmonic warmth and the note that most drives melodic resolution, creating a tonal world of extraordinary timelessness that seems to float outside ordinary harmonic expectation.

The Dagar family, the most distinguished dynasty in the Dhrupad tradition, has been the primary custodian of Vibhas across multiple generations; both the elder and junior Dagar Brothers (Nasir Moinuddin and Nasir Aminuddin, and their descendants) have rendered recordings of Vibhas that are considered essential documents of the pre-dawn dhrupad tradition.

There are no widely known film songs in Vibhas—its austerity and deep antiquity have kept it firmly within the concert and dhrupad raga sphere, where its rare performances in the last dark hour before sunrise are treated as events of exceptional musical and spiritual significance.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Vibhas's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
