Shyam Kalyan is dedicated to Krishna (Shyam). It uses both Madhyams and has the romantic, twilight quality of the Kalyan family.
Legend & Lore
Shyam Kalyan is an evening raga of the Kalyan family dedicated to Lord Krishna, whose epithet 'Shyam' (meaning dark-complexioned, beautiful) evokes the divine cowherd playing his flute at dusk on the banks of the Yamuna.
The raga belongs to the rich tradition of Krishna bhakti music that flourished in the Braj region and later in Rajput and Mughal courts, where twilight was considered the most auspicious hour for contemplating Krishna's form.
Its most distinctive musical feature is the use of both shuddha Madhyam and teevra Madhyam within a single raga — a characteristic known as 'dono Ma' — creating a tonal richness that oscillates between the brightness of pure Yaman and a warmer, more folk-coloured quality.
Phrases that emphasise the teevra Ma recall the openness of Yaman or Bihag, while those touching shuddha Ma introduce a softness reminiscent of Khamaj or Tilang, the dual Madhyam functioning as a kind of emotional modulation within a single performance.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi left particularly celebrated recordings of Shyam Kalyan in vilambit khayal style that remain touchstones of the raga's romantic-devotional aesthetic.
