Shuddha Malhaar is the original, pure form of the Malhaar family. All the other Malhaars (Miyan Ki, Gaud, Ramdasi, etc.) derive from this parent raga.
Legend & Lore
Shuddha Malhaar is regarded as the parent raga — the primordial source — of the entire Malhaar family, from which the great Miyan Ki Malhaar, Gaud Malhaar, Ramdasi Malhaar, Megh Malhaar, and Sur Malhaar all descend.
The word 'shuddha' (pure) in its name signals this original status: before Tansen added his innovations to create Miyan Ki Malhaar, before the various gharanas introduced their own elaborations, this was the Malhaar.
The legend of Tansen singing Malhaar to bring rain — one of the most famous stories in Indian classical music mythology, set at Akbar's court — is rooted in this raga's mysterious elemental power.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi gave extraordinary concert performances of Shuddha Malhaar, his voice conveying both the serenity and the pathos of rain falling on a landscape that had waited too long.
Sa and Pa as the twin pillars of the raga — vadi and samvadi — create an open, elemental stability, like rain that has no beginning and no end, only the present moment of falling.
The famous classical composition 'Garjat Barsat' captures the Malhaar aesthetic of thunder and release that Shuddha Malhaar embodies at its most primal.
