Shuddha Kalyan is the pure form of Kalyan, using only teevra Ma and no komal notes. It represents the essence of the Kalyan family.

Legend & Lore

Shuddha Kalyan stands as the purest and in many ways most philosophically complete expression of the vast Kalyan family — using exclusively the sharp fourth (teevra Ma) as its single departure from the natural scale, without the komal Re of Shree Kalyan, without the distinctive phrases of Yaman, without the structural complexities of Puriya or Marwa.

This deliberate restraint makes it a raga of elegant, concentrated beauty: one altered note deployed with absolute intentionality against a background of otherwise natural scale.

The raga's vadi Ga paired with samvadi Ni — a sixth relationship spanning the scale — creates melodic phrases that move expansively across the full octave rather than anchoring in any single register.

Gangubai Hangal of the Kirana gharana was particularly celebrated for her Shuddha Kalyan, which she performed with extraordinary emotional intimacy in late-evening concerts, her deep, resonant voice finding in the raga's clean architecture a space for pure lyrical expression.

The great Gwalior gharana singer Omkarnath Thakur also rendered Shuddha Kalyan in recordings that are studied today for their demonstration of how the teevra Ma can be used in both an aspiring, forward-reaching way and a plaintive, searching way within the same performance.

The raga appears in film: Naushad's composition 'Mohe Panghat Pe' from Mughal-E-Azam (1960) contains Kalyan-family melodic gestures that echo Shuddha Kalyan's vocabulary, demonstrating how deeply classical ragas inform Bollywood's most enduring compositions.
