Sarparda is a rare variant of the Kafi family. It shares Kafi's romantic, expressive character with subtle differences in phrasing and emphasis.

Legend & Lore

Sarparda takes its name from the Urdu and Persian sarparda — a curtain or veil — and the name is a precise description of the raga's emotional method: it reveals itself partially, allows depths to be sensed rather than fully stated, makes the listener lean forward into the music as though parting gauze to find more gauze behind it.

As a member of the Kafi family, it inherits the komal Ga and komal Ni that give all Kafi-lineage ragas their characteristic bittersweet romantic quality — the ache of separation (hijr) that has been the principal subject of Urdu and Braj lyric poetry for centuries.

What distinguishes Sarparda from its better-known Kafi relatives, however, is its sampoorna (seven-note) structure and its unusually positioned vadi on Re: while Kafi itself emphasizes Ga, Sarparda's phrases repeatedly return to the second degree as their point of resolution, creating a different melodic geography that careful listeners can identify even from short phrase fragments.

The vakra (oblique) movements in the ascent — characteristic detours away from the linear scale — serve as diagnostic fingerprints that distinguish Sarparda from Bhimpalasi, Bageshri, and other close Kafi relatives that a superficial hearing might confuse it with.

Knowledge of Sarparda has been transmitted primarily within the oral traditions of the Kirana and Agra gharanas, where it surfaces occasionally in late-night mehfil sessions as a vehicle for subtle melodic exploration that rewards specialist listeners.

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, whose mastery of the Kafi family's emotional nuances was encyclopedic, is said to have explored Sarparda in private settings, treating it as one of those intimate ragas best savoured in the atmosphere of a late-night gathering rather than a formal concert stage.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Sarparda's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
