Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Saraswati raga is dedicated to the goddess of knowledge and arts. It has a pure, bright, auspicious character.
Legend & Lore
Raga Saraswati is consecrated to the Hindu goddess of learning, music, and the fine arts — the deity most intimate to musicians — and its pure, luminous character faithfully mirrors her divine attributes of clarity, wisdom, creative perfection, and the kind of intelligence that is also a form of grace.
The raga belongs to the Bilawal thaat, the only thaat that employs all seven shuddha (natural, unmodified) notes without a single flattened or sharpened degree, and this harmonic purity gives Saraswati an unclouded brightness uniquely appropriate to a goddess associated with pristine knowledge — as though the raga itself were purified of all tonal impurity to become a worthy offering.
It is traditionally performed in the morning hours, and on Vasant Panchami — the spring festival dedicated entirely to Saraswati, when the world is covered in yellow marigolds — musicians and students across the subcontinent offer this raga as a living invocation, placing instruments before her image and singing for her blessing before the day's practice begins.
The vadi Gandhar lends the raga a warmth that prevents pure shuddha notes from becoming clinical or cold, while the samvadi Nishad provides a complementary brightness in the upper register, together giving Saraswati a three-dimensional quality — not just pure but alive, warm, and deeply felt.
Pandit Jasraj, whose bhakti-inflected style was particularly suited to ragas with divine associations, recorded celebrated performances of Saraswati that combined classical rigour with an almost luminous spiritual quality, and his rendering of the goddess's name as mantra within the raga's phrases created some of the most affecting moments in modern Hindustani vocal music.
Several prominent classical compositions — including khayal bandishes explicitly invoking Saraswati Mata — have been passed down through the Patiala and Jaipur gharanas, cementing this raga's place as the musical embodiment of the goddess's presence.
