Reva is named after the sacred Narmada river. It is a devotional morning raga with a flowing, river-like quality.
Legend & Lore
Reva is named for the Narmada, one of India's seven sacred rivers and the only major river to flow westward across the subcontinent, a direction considered divinely auspicious and spiritually contrary to ordinary flow — the river that moves against convention toward liberation.
Ancient texts describe the Narmada as older than even the Ganga, and Hindu pilgrimage traditions hold that merely beholding the Narmada — the 'Narmada Darshan' — is enough to cleanse accumulated sin, a belief that imbues the raga with the quality of effortless spiritual purification.
As a rare Bhairav-family raga with an audav (five-note) structure, Reva achieves an unusual spaciousness — the missing notes are not absent but implied, present as silences through which the river seems to move.
Its vadi komal Re is one of the most unusual choices in North Indian classical music, creating a persistent quality of yearning devotion that distinguishes Reva sharply from other morning ragas.
Gwalior and Agra gharana masters have used this raga as the opening raga of dawn baithaks, its purifying character setting the spiritual temperature for everything that follows.
The raga's melodic phrases tend to curve and loop like a river navigating valley bends rather than proceeding in straight ascending or descending lines.
