Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Legend & Lore
Ramkali is a morning raga of the Bhairav thaat family whose name invokes both Rama and Kali — a pairing that Indian aesthetic tradition understands as the union of protection and power, the gentle and the fierce, held together in the ambiguous emotional space of dawn.
The raga shares the komal Re and komal Dha of the Bhairav thaat, lending it the characteristic flat-tone gravity of the early morning hours, yet its sampoorna (heptatonic) structure gives it a melodic richness that distinguishes it from more austere dawn ragas like the pentatonic Jogiya.
Ma (Madhyam) as vadi settles the raga in the middle register, creating a stable platform from which its characteristic phrases — particularly the meditative oscillation around Ma and the weighted descent through komal Dha — unfold with great deliberation.
Ramkali is particularly associated with dhrupad, and compositions in this raga frequently address Rama directly in the context of prabhati (dawn prayer), situating the devotee at the threshold of the day in a state of surrender.
The Dagar brothers and other dhrupad maestros have maintained significant traditions of Ramkali performance, and it is considered one of the essential morning ragas of the concert season, alongside Bhairav and Lalit.
