Ramdasi Malhaar is a devotional variant of Malhaar associated with the Ramdasi sect. It has a more austere, bhakti character than the romantic Malhaar ragas.

Legend & Lore

Ramdasi Malhaar is a distinctive variant of the vast Malhaar family of monsoon ragas, associated with the devotional tradition of the Ramdasi sect — followers of Sant Ramdas, the 17th-century Marathi poet-saint and spiritual preceptor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Unlike the more romantic and folk-influenced Mian ki Malhaar or the ecstatic Mirabai ki Malhaar, Ramdasi Malhaar carries a distinctly bhakti character, its phrases evoking the earnest prayers of a devoted soul seeking union with the divine rather than the playful joy of rain on parched earth.

Musically, the raga belongs to the Kafi thaat with komal Gandhar and komal Nishad, and its vadi Ma grounds the raga with an earthy stability distinct from other Malhaars.

The characteristic Malhaar-ang phrase — Re-Ma-Pa with oscillating komal Ga — is present but restrained, lending more gravity and less abandon than its sibling ragas.

The raga is relatively rare in performance today, preserved chiefly within Gwalior and Agra gharana traditions.
