Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Rageshri · 5 compositions

Rageshri is a beautiful night raga with a romantic, serene quality. It avoids Pa (fifth) giving it a distinctive character.

Legend & Lore

Rageshri is one of the most cherished and widely performed night ragas in the Hindustani tradition, its very name—a compound of 'Raga' and 'Shri,' meaning beauty or auspiciousness—suggesting a raga of particular grace and nobility within the Khamaj framework.

Its most distinctive structural feature, the complete omission of Pa (the fifth degree), creates a persistent quality of melodic suspension and unresolved longing that makes it uniquely suited to the nocturnal mood of romantic yearning—the melody reaches upward through the night but finds no solid resting point, circling the emotional space of longing with beautiful purposelessness.

Rageshri is believed to have been cultivated most intensively in the Jaipur-Atrauli and Kirana gharanas, where its structural austerity was prized as a vehicle for profound emotional communication, and Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki's performances of the raga—particularly his vilambit khayal recordings—are considered among the most deeply felt renditions ever captured.

Ustad Rashid Khan also brought Rageshri to new audiences through performances that balanced its classical architecture with an accessible romantic warmth, introducing the raga to younger listeners unfamiliar with its depth.

The 1968 Hindi film song 'Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye' sung by Mukesh for Anand, often associated with the pentatonic night-raga tradition Rageshri represents, introduced its emotional character to millions of listeners.

Rageshri is frequently studied alongside Bageshri—a closely related raga that also omits Pa—to understand how identical structural choices can produce ragas with distinctly different emotional characters depending on phrase emphasis and ornamental choices.
