Puria is a dusk raga of the Marwa thaat closely related to Puriya Dhanashri. Its serious, contemplative character suits the transition from day to night.
Legend & Lore
Puria is one of the majestic evening ragas of the Marwa thaat, its somber grandeur perfectly capturing the gravity of the transition from daylight to darkness.
According to tradition, Puria was cultivated in the courts of Rajputana, where the setting sun called musicians to express the weight of day's end through slow, deliberate melodic unfolding.
Musically, Puria is distinguished by komal Rishabh and teevra Madhyam alongside a characteristically weak Pancham — its near-avoidance of Pa creates an unresolved, suspended quality of deep longing.
The raga's serious, contemplative character (karuna and shanta rasa) makes it best suited to slow vilambit khayal, where the long pauses between phrases carry as much meaning as the notes themselves.
Legendary exponents include Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, whose renditions defined this raga's majestic, brooding stillness.
