Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Pilu · 6 compositions
Pilu is a light classical raga that allows great freedom in note usage. It is very popular in thumri, dadra, and film music.
Legend & Lore
Raga Pilu is unique in the Hindustani tradition as a raga whose very grammar is built around expressive freedom rather than melodic restriction — while based broadly in the Kafi thaat with its komal Ga as the essential identifying signature, Pilu explicitly permits the use of virtually all twelve chromatic pitches within the context of its characteristic phrases, making it a deliberately mishra (mixed) raga by design rather than an accidental or corrupted one.
This extraordinary permission reflects the raga's deepest identity: Pilu is not a fixed melodic pathway but a melodic world with a characteristic emotional center — the bittersweet, intimate, romantic quality of the komal Ga surrounded by the freedom to paint any shade of that emotion with whatever note serves best.
The raga is the quintessential vehicle for thumri and dadra, the two premier light classical forms in the Hindustani tradition, where text-based emotional expression (bhava) takes precedence over raga grammar, and Pilu's open note palette makes it the most completely expressive container available for these forms.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's Pilu thumris — particularly 'Babul Mora' and various dadras — are considered the gold standard of the form, his voice moving through the raga's chromatic possibilities with a freedom that sounds simultaneously inevitable and improvised.
Begum Akhtar, the incomparable ghazal and thumri singer, used Pilu as one of her primary canvases, and her recordings demonstrate how the raga's broad tonal palette allows a singer to embody multiple emotional states within a single performance.
Girija Devi, the last great exponent of the Banaras thumri tradition, was especially celebrated for her Pilu dadras, where her characteristic use of chromatic passing tones within the raga's framework achieved an expressiveness that many younger singers have studied but few have matched.
In Hindi film music, Pilu's characteristic komal Ga and the emotional world it represents appears in dozens of songs across the golden age of Hindi cinema.
