Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Patdeep · 6 compositions
Patdeep (patdeep means "lamp") is an evening raga with a warm, glowing quality, evoking the image of an oil lamp at dusk.
Legend & Lore
Patdeep, whose name compounds 'Pat' (possibly from 'patt,' referring to silk, or an archaic term for light) with 'deep' (lamp), is most commonly translated as 'the lamp that illuminates' or 'silk lamp,' evoking the warm, steady glow of an oil lamp being lit at the precise moment day surrenders to night.
Some scholars trace the raga's formal development to the Mughal court tradition, where the twilight hour required distinct musical moods to mark the transition between the expansive afternoon ragas and the introspective night ragas, and Patdeep was cultivated as a raga that perfectly inhabited that transitional moment.
Its structural home in the Kafi thaat means it employs komal Ga and komal Ni, which together create the bittersweet warmth of a flame—comforting and beautiful, but with an inherent fragility that the surrounding darkness makes poignant.
The vadi Pa (fifth degree) anchors the raga in a stable, luminous center, and phrases circling Pa from above and below create the steady, radiant quality of a flame that does not flicker.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's khayal recordings of Patdeep are considered definitive in the Kirana gharana tradition, and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan gave celebrated performances on All India Radio that have been treasured by connoisseurs.
The film composer S.D.
Burman used Patdeep's melodic material for the evening song 'Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le' from the film Baazi (1951), bringing the raga's lamplight warmth to millions of listeners.
