Nat Kamod blends the heroic Nat with the romantic Kamod, creating a raga that balances vigour with tenderness.
Legend & Lore
Nat Kamod is a jod raga — one of the classical tradition's most artistically ambitious forms — created by the deliberate fusion of two ancient parent ragas: the proud, martial Nat and the sweetly romantic Kamod, both residing within the Kalyan thaat's golden tonal world.
Nat is among the most venerable ragas in the tradition, associated with the cosmic dance of Lord Krishna (Nata-raja in the Shaiva tradition) and with the Nat caste of performer-warriors who gave it their name; its musical character is bold, leaping, and assertive.
Kamod, by contrast, inhabits a world of tender romantic longing — its phrases curve and reach like someone extending a hand to a beloved slightly out of reach.
The rules governing their combination in Nat Kamod are precise: Nat's heroic phrases predominate in the lower and middle octaves while Kamod's more sinuous romantic movements emerge as the melody climbs into the upper register, creating a musical narrative that is simultaneously a heroic journey and a love story.
The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, through Ustad Alladiya Khan and his disciples Kesarbai Kerkar and Mogubai Kurdikar, was most celebrated for its mastery of compound ragas like Nat Kamod, treating the jod form not as a curiosity but as an opportunity for the deepest kind of musical storytelling.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's performance of Nat Kamod at the Sawai Gandharva festival in Pune — one of India's most important classical music events — demonstrated how the compound raga can sustain an entire night's raga elaboration when developed by a master, the hero and the lover in perpetual conversation.
