Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Nat Bhairav · 6 compositions

Nat Bhairav is a combination of Nat and Bhairav ragas. It has a powerful, devotional character and is performed in the early morning.

Legend & Lore

Nat Bhairav is a compound sandhi prakash raga forged by grafting the vigorous, rhythmically incisive character of Raga Nat onto the ancient spiritual gravity of Bhairav — the paramount raga of the pre-dawn hours — resulting in a melodic personality of unusual emotional range, simultaneously heroic and devotional.

The komal Re and komal Dha inherited from the Bhairav thaat lend it the characteristic flat-tone pathos of the dawn, while the Nat element introduces an energetic forward drive that prevents the raga from settling into pure introspection.

This dual nature, combining Veera (heroic) and Bhakti (devotional) rasas within a single framework, is rare in the Hindustani repertoire and makes Nat Bhairav a significant compositional challenge.

Ustad Vilayat Khan left celebrated sitar recordings in which the two personalities of the raga are held in creative tension, and Pandit Ravi Shankar explored its dramatic potential in concert.

It is typically performed in the early morning hours before sunrise, aligning it with the cluster of Bhairav-family ragas that accompany the transition from night to day.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Nat Bhairav's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
