Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Megh (cloud) belongs to the Malhaar family and is associated with the monsoon season. It has a meditative, peaceful quality.
Legend & Lore
Megh, meaning 'cloud,' is the most ancient and austere member of the Malhaar family—a group of ragas collectively consecrated to the monsoon season—and its origins are traced in texts as far back as the Natyashastra tradition, where it was invoked in rituals meant to summon rain.
The most famous legend attached to any Malhaar raga involves Miyan Tansen, the court musician of Emperor Akbar, who is said to have performed Megh (or Miyan ki Malhaar, in some tellings) so perfectly that storm clouds gathered over the city even in a drought year, and actual rain fell on the palace courtyard.
Unlike its more ornate family members—Miyan ki Malhaar, Gaud Malhaar, Sur Malhaar—Megh retains only five notes, making it the most spare and meditative of the group, its bare pentatonic structure evoking the vast, featureless grey sky before the rains break.
The vadi Sa and samvadi Pa create a perfect fifth relationship that anchors the raga in grounded spaciousness, giving it a quality of infinite, still vastness rather than the restlessness of later Malhaar variants.
Pandit Jasraj gave landmark concert recordings of Megh in which extended khayal alaaps of over forty minutes explored the raga's contemplative depths with extraordinary sensitivity.
The film song 'Garjat Barsat Sawan Aayo Re' from the 1960s drew on Megh's melodic essence to capture the monsoon's arrival in popular memory.
