Mand is a Rajasthani folk-classical raga associated with royal courts and festivity. It has a stately, majestic folk character.
Legend & Lore
Mand is a raga of proud Rajasthani lineage, born not in the meditation cells of renunciants but in the durbar (royal court) halls of Marwar, Mewar, and Jaisalmer, where it accompanied coronations, the return of victorious armies, and the festive revelry of royal marriages.
Its origins lie in the repertoire of the Langas and Manganiyars — the hereditary musician communities of the Thar desert — who preserved and refined this raga across generations of court service, giving it a character simultaneously stately and warm-blooded, with the folk directness of the desert alongside the cultivated ornamentation of professional courtly artistry.
The raga's most celebrated composition is the thumri 'Kesariya Balam Padharo Mhare Des' — considered the unofficial anthem of Rajasthan and one of the most beloved folk-classical songs in the subcontinent — a song of joyful welcome and longing that perfectly captures Mand's combination of pride and tenderness.
Legendary vocalist Kishori Amonkar brought Mand into the highest classical concert halls, while Mallikarjun Mansur's recordings demonstrated how its folk roots need not be subdued but can be celebrated as a form of musical truth; the folk singer Laxmi Kumari Chundawat of Jaisalmer gave it perhaps its most authentic and raw expression, unmediated by classical conventions.
The Bilawal thaat's natural, unaltered scale provides a bright, open canvas on which Mand's character is defined entirely through characteristic ornaments — the rolling gamaks, the cascading murkis, the bold leaps — rather than through any altered notes.
In Hindi cinema, Mand's influence can be heard in Lata Mangeshkar's 'Bhooli Hui Yaadein' and in folk-tinged songs from classic Rajasthani films that brought this court raga to tens of millions of ears.
