Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Malkauns · 10 compositions
Malkauns is one of the most ancient ragas in Indian classical music, associated with Shiva. Its powerful, serious character makes it one of the most respected ragas.
Legend & Lore
Malkauns is among the most ancient ragas in the Hindustani tradition, its origins attributed to pre-Vedic antiquity and its mythological identity inseparable from Lord Shiva's tandava — the cosmic dance of destruction and renewal that the god performs at the midnight hour in the cremation grounds.
One of the most celebrated legends of Hindustani music holds that Tansen, the legendary court musician of Emperor Akbar, performed Malkauns to break the curse of fire he had accidentally summoned while singing Raga Deepak, the music of his disciple Baiju Bawra cooling the flames with rain brought by Malkauns — a legend that encodes something true about the raga's elemental, almost supernatural emotional force.
Musically, its pentatonic scale uses three consecutive flat notes — komal Ga, komal Dha, and komal Ni — alongside Ma and Sa, creating a tonal world that is simultaneously dark, brooding, and profoundly still.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's recordings of Malkauns are considered benchmarks of the Kirana gharana, and Ustad Amir Khan's version demonstrates how the raga's deep midnight register can be explored with a quality of absolute concentration.
The film song 'Man tarpat Hari darshan ko aaj' from Baiju Bawra (1952) — composed by Naushad — draws heavily on Malkauns's scale, bringing its ancient power to millions of listeners.
