Madhuvanti — from the Sanskrit 'madhu' meaning honey or sweetness — is a raga of relatively modern classical origin that masterfully blends the austere elements of Todi (komal Ga, teevra Ma) with the brightness of shuddha Ni, producing an evening raga of unusual sweetness and charm.
It gained wide recognition partly through film composers who recognised its cinematic romantic quality; the song 'O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aayi' sung by Lata Mangeshkar is one of the most famous illustrations of Madhuvanti in film music.
Its pentatonic structure concentrates all emotional weight on the tense half-step between komal Ga and teevra Ma, which gives it an expressive intensity unusual for such a sweet-natured raga.
Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar and Vidushi Kishori Amonkar have rendered memorable classical renditions.
