Lalit Panchham is a variant of Lalit that includes Pa (Panchham/fifth), which is normally omitted in Lalit, giving it a slightly fuller character.
Legend & Lore
Lalit Panchham is a rare and thoughtfully constructed variant of Raga Lalit — one of Hindustani music's most demanding and philosophically complex pre-dawn creations — that introduces Pa (Panchham, the perfect fifth) into a melodic world from which standard Lalit deliberately, almost defiantly, withholds it.
Lalit itself is among the most unusual ragas in the Hindustani repertoire: it employs both shuddha Ma and tivra Ma simultaneously, uses komal Re, and specifically omits Pa — the most naturally stable and grounding of all intervals — to create an atmosphere of profound existential restlessness, as if the music itself cannot find a place to stand.
Lalit Panchham reintroduces Pa while retaining both Madhyams and komal Re, giving the raga a slightly more anchored character without dissolving its pre-dawn intensity — the effect is like a wanderer who, still lost in the dark, at least finds a tree to lean against.
Tradition attributes the core Lalit to the ancient guru-shishya lineages, and its elaboration across the Marwa thaat's characteristic komal Re and tivra Ma framework is associated with the Jaipur-Atrauli and Bhindibazaar gharana styles, where the Marwa family receives its most concentrated and extended treatment.
Ustad Amir Khan is known to have explored this variant in his extraordinary late-night concert performances, drawing on its unique combination of Lalit's metaphysical searching and Pa's quiet reassurance to create performances that moved listeners between despair and consolation within a single phrase.
The raga's vadi is tivra Ma — the raised fourth, the most harmonically unstable position — ensuring that even with Pa present, the music's center of gravity remains on an unresolved, yearning degree, and that Lalit Panchham never loses the essential restlessness of its parent.
