Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Lalit · 6 compositions
Lalit is a pre-dawn raga of great depth and seriousness. Its unique feature is the use of both Madhyams — shuddha and teevra.
Legend & Lore
Lalit is among the most singular and demanding ragas in the Hindustani canon, assigned to the final hour before dawn when darkness is at its most absolute and the soul, in Indian poetic tradition, is most nakedly confronted with longing.
Its most arresting structural feature is the simultaneous presence of both Madhyams — shuddha Ma (natural fourth) and teevra Ma (augmented fourth) — a characteristic it shares with very few ragas, including its thaat-relatives Marwa and Puriya, but exploits with a distinctive emotional logic: shuddha Ma carries a note of unresolved yearning while teevra Ma reaches upward toward light not yet arrived.
Lalit further omits Pa (Pancham) entirely — removing the most stable consonant fifth from the scale — which creates a quality of suspension unique in Indian music, as though the raga itself is holding its breath.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's recordings of Lalit are considered among the towering achievements of the Kirana gharana, and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's renditions demonstrate how the raga's Karuna rasa can be expressed through the finest nuances of pitch inflection.
Pandit Kumar Gandharva also gave memorable performances, and the raga remains a standard of the pre-dawn prabhat concert session, chosen precisely because its emotional depth matches the gravity of the hour.
