Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Khamaj is a sensuous, romantic raga associated with the night. Its characteristic Ni komal in arohana and Ni shuddha in avarohana gives it a distinctive quality.
Legend & Lore
Raga Khamaj is the parent raga of the Khamaj thaat and stands as perhaps the most quintessentially sensuous raga in the entire Hindustani repertoire — a raga in which the erotic and the devotional, the festive and the intimate, the formal classical and the freely expressive semi-classical, all converge in a single mood of warm, moonlit longing.
Its characteristic structural feature — using komal Ni (flat seventh) in ascent and shuddha Ni (natural seventh) in descent — creates an upward yearning that momentarily resolves downward, a melodic gesture that almost literally enacts the push-and-pull of desire.
Khamaj is the native home of the Thumri tradition, particularly the Lucknow and Banaras styles, where its grammatical flexibility allows vocalists extraordinary latitude in treating text: every syllable of a composition like 'Aeri Aali Piya Bin' can be stretched, coloured, and ornamented differently in each performance, making no two renditions identical.
The raga is also associated with the festive, collective celebrations of North Indian culture — its bright energy and major-scale warmth (excepting the komal Ni) make it the ideal vehicle for seasonal compositions and songs of unambiguous romantic joy, in contrast to the more melancholic viraha of ragas like Bageshri.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's extravagant, sensuous Khamaj Thumris remain the gold standard of the tradition; the song 'Lag Ja Gale Se' recorded in various classical and popular renditions draws on the raga's characteristic warmth.
The film tradition has returned repeatedly to Khamaj for songs of romantic festivity, and countless bhajans in the Khamaj ang remain beloved across North India.
