Kalingda is a light, serene morning raga from the Sarang family with a fresh, bright character.

Legend & Lore

Kalingda is an understated gem of the morning hours, drawing its name from the ancient Kalinga — the coastal kingdom corresponding to present-day Odisha, whose conquest by Emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE was so devastating that it transformed him into a champion of ahimsa (non-violence) and Buddhism, an emotional arc not unlike what this raga suggests: something pristine, something before the weight of history has fully settled.

Belonging to the Bilawal thaat — Hindustani music's equivalent of the Western major scale, built entirely on shuddha swaras — Kalingda carries none of the komal-swara shadow that marks most morning ragas; instead it opens into pure, unqualified light.

As a member of the Sarang family, it shares a kinship with ragas associated with brightness and the outdoors, though its morning performance time gives it a fresher, more tentative quality than the full-throated midday Sarangs.

Its audav pentatonic structure — built around vadi Re and samvadi Pa — creates a spacious, open architecture that suggests the vast expanse of sky visible in early morning before the day's complexity arrives.

The raga is not among the most frequently performed in major concert circuits, but it occupies an honored place in the repertoires of musicians who value understated, pure ragas over emotionally complex ones; it is particularly prized as a morning devotional offering in temples and during early-morning riyaz.

The Gwalior and Agra gharanas have preserved careful compositions in Kalingda that reveal, in slow vistar, a surprising depth beneath its initially simple surface.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Kalingda's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
