Jogeshwari is dedicated to the goddess Jogeshwari. It has a devotional, mystical character with elements of both Bhairavi and Kirwani.

Legend & Lore

Jogeshwari is a night raga dedicated to the goddess Jogeshwari (also known as Yogeshwari), a fierce yet compassionate manifestation of Shakti whose most ancient shrine stands in the cave temples of Jogeshwari in Mumbai, carved into black basalt by devotees centuries before the city existed under any other name.

The raga belongs conceptually to the Bhairavi family in its tonal language of komal notes but absorbs elements from the darker Kirwani tradition, creating a hybrid mystical character that mirrors the goddess's own dual nature — simultaneously compassionate mother and formidable sovereign of the night.

Its sampoorna (heptatonic) structure allows for expansive melodic exploration, and skilled performers begin with slow, searching alaps that move like incense smoke through the lower octave before unfurling into the upper reaches, evoking the act of midnight prayer and total surrender before the divine.

The raga is particularly associated with the Gwalior and Kirana gharanas, where it has been rendered with great bhakti and an undercurrent of lamentation — the karuna rasa — as though the devotee simultaneously weeps and rejoices in the goddess's presence.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's recordings of Jogeshwari bandishes demonstrate how the raga's dense emotional layering can sustain extended khayal development without ever losing its devotional core.

Its performance reaches its fullest power in the late night hours when the city quiets and the cave deity's presence, in the musical imagination, becomes palpable.
