Hemant (meaning winter/autumn) evokes the gentle coolness of the winter season. It has a warm, romantic quality suited to the cold months.
Legend & Lore
Hemant takes its name from the hemant ritu, the early winter season of the Indian calendar (Kartik through Posh, roughly November–January), when the air turns crisp but not yet biting and the evenings acquire a particular romantic charge—that quality of gathering cold that draws people toward warmth, toward fire, toward each other, toward memory.
The raga belongs to Khamaj thaat, whose signature komal Nishad provides the essential sweetness and gentle dissonance that makes the raga feel like warmth that simultaneously contains awareness of the cold surrounding it—comfort that cannot make you forget what lies outside.
Its audav-sampoorna structure, using five notes in the ascent and all seven in the descent, creates an asymmetry rich with expressive possibility: the ascent moves with the quick directness of seeking warmth, while the descent lingers with the reluctance of someone unwilling to leave it, exploring every passing note on the way down.
This structural asymmetry also means that the raga's full emotional character—including the nuanced treatment of komal Ni in the descent—is only revealed in the avaroha, keeping the listener leaning forward through the ascent in anticipation of what the descent will reveal.
S.D.
Burman was particularly inspired by Hemant's atmosphere, using its characteristic phrases in several of Hindi cinema's most enduring winter melodies; Madan Mohan built it into compositions for Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi that remain definitive expressions of romantic winter longing in popular culture.
Classical vocalists including Pt.
Jasraj explored Hemant's more contemplative dimensions in concert, demonstrating that beneath its accessible sweetness the raga contains a philosophical depth about the season as a time of drawing inward that rewards extended classical elaboration.
