Hem Kalyan

Hem Kalyan — 'Hem' meaning gold in Sanskrit — belongs to the extensive Kalyan family of evening ragas, its name evoking the warm golden light of the sky as the sun touches the horizon.

The raga is distinguished above all by its treatment of two forms of Madhyam: the teevra (sharp) Ma appears in the ascent, conferring the characteristic brightness and optimism of Kalyan, while the shuddha (natural) Ma appears in the descent, introducing an earthier, more settled quality that pure Yaman lacks.

This dual Madhyam treatment gives Hem Kalyan a particular sense of movement — a golden ascent and a more contemplative return — that makes every phrase feel like a miniature journey from aspiration to acceptance.

Pandit Ravi Shankar performed Hem Kalyan at several landmark concerts, and Ustad Vilayat Khan recorded the raga in his characteristically fluid, ornate sitar style.
