Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Hamir · 5 compositions

Hamir is a night raga associated with heroism and romance. The use of both Madhyams is its distinctive feature.

Legend & Lore

Hamir is an ancient and majestic night raga of the Kalyan thaat, distinguished above all by its use of both shuddha Ma and teevra Ma — a feature shared with very few ragas in the Hindustani system.

The raga is named after the legendary Rajput king Hammir Dev Chauhan of Ranthambore, who became a symbol of martial valour and the refusal to surrender; the raga's heroic sweep is understood as a musical embodiment of that spirit.

Its audav aroha (omitting Re and Dha) gives it a controlled, purposeful ascent, while the sampoorna avaroha unfolds with regal breadth.

The raga moves freely between Shringar and Veera rasas, combining romantic expansiveness with heroic confidence.

Ustad Amir Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and Ustad Rashid Khan have created landmark recordings.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Hamir's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
