Gandhari is named after the blindfolded queen of the Mahabharata. Its melancholic, regal quality evokes a dignity born of suffering.

Legend & Lore

Gandhari takes its name from the tragic queen of the Mahabharata, wife of the blind king Dhritarashtra, who voluntarily tied a cloth over her own eyes for life in loyalty to her husband—a gesture of extraordinary devotion that also condemned her to participate sightlessly in the catastrophic destruction of her entire family and people.

The raga's Asavari thaat lineage provides its characteristic triple-komal palette of komal Ga, komal Dha, and komal Ni, three simultaneously flattened notes that create a sustained, pervasive melancholy—not the sharp grief of sudden loss but the long, dignified sorrow of one who has fully accepted a life's tragedy and found composure within it.

Its early morning timing places the raga in the cool, grey hours of pre-dawn when reflection on what one has endured is most unavoidable, when last night's forgetting has worn away and reality reasserts itself with the first pale light through the window.

The sampoorna structure ensures the raga can sustain fully elaborated classical presentations—long alap sections in which the three komal notes are introduced with care, building the mood of dignified suffering before a bandish crystallises the narrative emotion in words.

Pandits of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas have composed bandishes for Gandhari that directly reference episodes from the Mahabharata—Gandhari's lament after the war, her curse of Krishna—giving the raga an unusually explicit literary heritage.

The great dhrupad exponent Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar performed Gandhari in recordings that are considered definitive, demonstrating how the raga's komal notes, under slow, precise elaboration, create an atmosphere of tragic dignity that few other ragas can approach.
