Durgeshwari is a devotional raga related to Durga. Created by Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Legend & Lore

Durgeshwari is a modern raga composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar as a devotional offering to Goddess Durga — the eight-armed protectress whose name means 'the one who is difficult to approach,' and whose worship crests at twilight when the boundary between the divine and human worlds thins.

Rooted in the Asavari thaat, it employs komal Re, komal Ga, komal Dha, and komal Ni to create a soundscape of tender, surrendered reverence — the four flattened notes evoking the bowing of the human spirit before something immeasurably greater than itself.

Its audav (pentatonic) structure — omitting Ga and Dha — concentrates the devotional energy into five notes of crystalline purpose, each phrase returning inevitably to the vadi Re like a worshipper's gaze drawn again and again to the deity's face.

Ravi Shankar performed the raga in his landmark concerts and recordings throughout the 1960s and 70s, where it stood as evidence of his conviction that composition, like meditation, could be a form of worship.

The raga's samvadi Pa and vadi Re form a fifth-interval spine that gives the music both stability and an upward, aspiring quality — the tension between earthly rootedness and spiritual longing that defines the bhakti experience.

Evening is its natural home: the fading light, the lit lamps, the smell of marigolds and camphor that accompany Durga puja all find their sonic equivalent in the raga's gentle, komal-swara twilight.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Durgeshwari's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
