Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Durga is a pentatonic raga named after the goddess Durga. It has a devotional, serene quality and is often performed in the evening.
Legend & Lore
Raga Durga takes its name directly from the goddess Durga — the eight-armed, lion-mounted deity of benevolent power, fierce protection, and victory over darkness — and every dimension of the raga's character reflects those divine qualities: its sound is serene, auspicious, and radiant in the way that only a deity associated with both maternal care and warrior courage can be.
The raga belongs to the Bilawal thaat and employs five shuddha swaras — Sa, Re, Ma, Pa, and Dha — omitting both Ga (the third) and Ni (the seventh), creating a pentatonic scale whose open intervals and all-natural pitches produce an atmosphere of pure, unclouded auspiciousness.
Durga is prescribed for the evening hours, a timing that aligns it with the sandhya vandanam (evening prayer ritual) of Hindu practice and with the lighting of the evening lamp — a daily act of devotion to the goddess in countless North Indian homes.
The raga has become the musical centre of Navratri celebrations across North India, where its characteristic simplicity makes it equally accessible to trained classical musicians performing all-night concerts and to congregational devotional singers performing aarti; Pandit Jasraj's devotional recordings in Durga, particularly his marathon Navratri concert performances, are considered the most authoritative expressions of the raga's spiritual character.
The raga's pentatonic structure and bright, open sound have also made it a vehicle for compositions in the lighter classical and bhajan traditions, where its accessibility ensures a broad audience without sacrificing the raga's characteristic nobility and divine association.
