Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

"Aa chal ke tujhe, main leke chaloon"

Desh · 11 compositions
Desh is associated with the rains and romance, and has been used extensively in Indian film music. Its distinctive combination of Khamaj and Bilawal notes gives it a sweet, nostalgic character.
Legend & Lore
Desh, literally meaning "the homeland" or "the country," is one of the most widely-used ragas in Bollywood film music.
It belongs to the monsoon family of ragas and is associated with the longing and romance of the rainy season.
The raga's distinctive feature is its audav (pentatonic) ascent — omitting Ga and Dha on the way up — while using all seven notes in the descent.
This creates an asymmetry that perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of separation and longing during the rains.

historyHistorical Period
Medieval to Mughal Era. Desh is thought to have developed between the 12th and 16th centuries as Khamaj-family ragas were codified. It has been a staple of the Benaras and Agra gharana repertoires for centuries.
exploreOrigin & Context
Desh belongs to the Khamaj thaat and is considered a monsoon raga — its emotional world is inseparable from the Indian rainy season (June–September). Its audav-sampoorna asymmetry (5 notes ascending, 7 descending) is the defining structural feature that gives it its characteristic blend of lightness and richness. The raga is also associated with the Khamaj family's characteristically sensuous, romantic affect.
paletteRagamala Iconography
Traditional Ragamala paintings from Rajasthani and Pahari schools depict Desh as a woman standing on a rooftop or balcony during the rainy season, gazing into the distance — the archetypal image of a nayika (heroine) awaiting the return of her beloved while monsoon clouds gather.

- ✦
Desh's connection to the word "homeland" runs deeper than its name — the raga is associated with the feeling of viraha (separation) specifically in the context of being away from one's home during the monsoon, a quintessentially Indian emotional experience.
- ✦
Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and set to music in the Desh scale, became one of India's national symbols — making Desh perhaps the only raga directly embedded in a nation's political identity.
- ✦
Desh's asymmetric scale — clean five notes ascending, full seven descending — musically mirrors the experience of longing: the reach upward is unencumbered and light, but the return is rich, full, and reluctant to end.
- ✦
Despite its Khamaj thaat origin (associated with komal Ni), Desh famously uses both komal Ni in descent and occasionally treats other notes flexibly, making it one of the most thaat-boundary-blurring ragas in common performance.
- ✦
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's Desh khayal recordings are considered among the warmest and most romantically charged interpretations in the tradition; Girija Devi's Desh thumri performances are equally celebrated in the semi-classical world, especially the monsoon repertoire of the Benaras gharana.

Naushad's "Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki" (Dulari, 1949), S.D. Burman's "Hai Apna Dil To Aawara" (Solva Saal, 1958), and Hemant Kumar's "Vande Mataram" (Anand Math, 1952) are among the most iconic film uses of Desh — each exploiting a different facet of the raga's monsoon-romance emotional world.
