Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Darbari Kanada is one of the grandest ragas in Hindustani classical music, created by Miyan Tansen for Emperor Akbar's court. Its andolan (oscillation) on Ga and Ni gives it a distinctive, stately character.
Legend & Lore
Darbari Kanada is one of the most majestic ragas in all of Hindustani music, literally meaning "of the court" (Darbari) from the Kanada family.
It was created by the legendary Miyan Tansen for Emperor Akbar's court in the 16th century — a raga befitting imperial grandeur.
Its characteristic feature is the meen (oscillation) or andolan on the komal Ga and komal Ni — these notes are not held cleanly but approached with a slow, weighty glide that creates a profound sense of gravity and majesty.
Darbari is performed late at night and demands exceptional technical mastery from performers.
translateEtymology
Of the court, courtly, befitting a royal darbar
An ancient family of ragas; possibly from the Kannada region or an older musical lineage
historyHistorical Period
Mughal Era, c. 1565–1580 CE. The Ain-i-Akbari, the official chronicle of Akbar's reign by Abu'l-Fazl, records Tansen's music and the ragas he composed.
temple_hinduDeity & Symbolism
Traditionally associated with Lord Shiva in his Tandava (cosmic dance) aspect — the grave, night-time destroyer-creator energy. The raga's weight and grandeur are linked to Shaivite traditions of late-night ritual music.
exploreOrigin & Context
Created by Miyan Tansen (c. 1506–1589), the most celebrated musician in Indian history, for the court of Emperor Akbar of the Mughal Empire. It was composed to be performed in the late-night darbar (royal court) — a raga whose gravity and grandeur could hold the attention of an emperor and his courtiers past midnight.
paletteRagamala Iconography
Darbari Kanada Ragamala paintings typically depict a king seated on his throne in a nocturnal darbar, surrounded by courtiers and musicians, with lamps burning in a darkened hall — an image of imperial gravity and nocturnal power.

- ✦
Darbari Kanada is considered one of the most technically demanding ragas to perform correctly — the andolan (oscillation) on komal Ga must be slow and deliberate, not a fast vibrato; getting it wrong fundamentally alters the raga's character.
- ✦
The Kanada family includes Adana, Nayaki Kanada, Shahana Kanada, and several other ragas — Darbari is the most prominent but the family shares characteristic melodic phrases.
- ✦
Classical texts note that Darbari should ideally be performed in the third prahar of the night (12–3 am) — the deepest, most silent part of the night — when its gravity finds maximum resonance.
- ✦
The song "Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko" from Baiju Bawra (1952) introduced Darbari Kanada to millions; Mohammed Rafi's rendition used the raga's characteristic andolan on komal Ga to convey spiritual anguish — and the song's use in a story about musical rivalry with Tansen, the raga's own creator, is a beautiful historical irony.
- ✦
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's 1950s HMV recordings of Darbari are considered among the most authoritative ever made — the slow andolan on komal Ga in his voice had a physical weight that defined the standard for generations. Ustad Amir Khan's long, meditative alaaps in this raga run to over an hour in some recordings, demonstrating its extraordinary architectural depth.

Key distinctions that set Darbari Kanada apart from similar raags
Adana belongs to the Kanada family but is faster and more energetic — it drops Darbari's characteristic slow oscillation (andolan) on Ga and has a brighter, more aggressive character.
Jaunpuri is often called the morning Darbari — it has a similar komal Ga and Ni but lacks Darbari's iconic meend on Ga. Jaunpuri is performed at dawn, Darbari late at night.
Both are attributed to Tansen and use komal Ga, but Malhaar is a monsoon raag with a distinctive phrase structure around Pa and Ni that is absent in Darbari.
