Bihagda is closely related to Bihag but uses both Madhyams and includes Dha, giving it a fuller, more elaborate character.

Legend & Lore

Bihagda is a close relative of the beloved night raga Bihag, sharing its Bilawal thaat base and Shringar rasa orientation, but extending Bihag's melodic vocabulary by incorporating both forms of Madhyam — shuddha and teevra Ma — as well as Dhaivat, which Bihag often omits in its ascent, giving it a fuller, more elaborate seven-note character.

The suffix in 'Bihagda' suggests an elaboration or extension of the parent raga — Bihag with additional melodic material that opens more pathways for exploration.

Pandit Jasraj performed Bihagda in a number of concert recordings, demonstrating how the raga's extra notes create richer territory than pure Bihag allows, particularly in the long vilambit sections where the dual Madhyam can be savored fully.

Ustad Rashid Khan also explored this raga, favoring it for its combination of romantic warmth and meditative depth.

The teevra Ma appears in specific ascending phrases while the shuddha Ma provides a different color on descent, each adding a distinct emotional shade to the same note position.

Several Hindi film composers have drawn on the Bihag-Bihagda aesthetic for nocturnal romantic songs, its night-time warmth lending itself naturally to the tradition of raat ke raag in film music.

Many Hindi film songs blend multiple raags across their mukhda and antara. When searching, you may discover songs primarily in other raags that share Bihagda's emotional palette — that's intentional cross-raag composition by the music director.
