Bihag is a sweet, romantic night raga that uses both Madhyams in descent. It is popular in thumri and film music for its tender, intimate quality.
Legend & Lore
Bihag is one of Hindustani music's most beloved and widely performed night ragas, distinguished above all by its remarkable use of both shuddha Madhyam (natural fourth) and teevra Madhyam (sharp fourth) within the same raga — typically the natural Ma in ascent and the sharp Ma appearing characteristically in certain descending phrases, creating a uniquely shimmering, unstable sweetness unlike any other night raga.
The vadi Ga (Gandhar) of Bilawal thaat — a shuddha (natural) third, bright and warm — imparts a tender luminosity that makes the night feel intimate and enchanted rather than mysterious or melancholic.
Bihag's pentatonic ascent (Sa Ga Ma Pa Ni, skipping Re and Dha) creates a series of characteristic upward leaps that sound eager and light before the descent fills in the complete scale in its smooth, winding return.
The raga has been a staple of both khayal and thumri for its ability to embody the romantic sweetness of a night encounter, and it crossed into film music where compositions like 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zidd Na Karo' — a thumri-flavored composition rendered immortally by Farida Khanum and strongly grounded in Bihag's emotional world — became icons of romantic expression.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's renditions in vilambit (slow tempo) khayal demonstrated the raga's capacity for deep contemplative beauty, while Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's mercurial versions showed its lighter, playful dimensions, and Kishori Amonkar approached it with a feminine tenderness that revealed yet another facet of its complex sweetness.
The raga has inspired more compositions across more styles than almost any other night raga in the canon.
