Basant Bahar is a compound raga combining Basant and Bahar, both spring ragas. It was popularized by the 1956 film of the same name.
Legend & Lore
Basant Bahar is a jod raga — a compound raga formed by weaving together two distinct parent ragas — uniting Basant, the bold raga of Holi and the teevra Madhyam, with Bahar, the lush raga of blossoming spring with its natural Madhyam and tender, lyrical phrases.
Both parent ragas are spring ragas, and their combination represents the full sensory spectrum of the season: the sharp, festive energy of Holi drumbeats giving way to the gentle shimmer of new leaves and cool breezes.
The raga achieved legendary popular fame through the 1956 Hindi film of the same name, which featured a celebrated musical contest sequence in which the playback singer Manna Dey — trained in classical music — matched his voice against the great Kirana gharana vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in the composition 'Ketaki Gulab Juhi Champa Sab Phool Le Aao,' a sequence still regarded as the high-water mark of classical music's integration with Hindi cinema.
In classical performance, convention dictates presenting the Basant section first — with its characteristic teevra Ma phrases and bold ascent — before transitioning into the more lyrical Bahar section, creating a narrative arc from assertion to tenderness.
Pandit Jasraj and Kishori Amonkar both recorded authoritative concert versions, each exploring the distinct personalities of the two parent ragas before drawing them into a unified whole.
The raga is often presented in morning or late morning hours, its festive exuberance suited to the bright optimism of daylight hours rather than the introspection of night.
