Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Basant · 4 compositions

Basant is the raga of spring and is performed during the Basant Panchami festival. It has a joyful, festive character.

Legend & Lore

Basant is among the oldest ragas in the Hindustani canon, its roots braided into the ancient spring festival Basant Panchami, which heralds the arrival of the season with offerings of marigolds and mustard blooms to the goddess Saraswati.

Its mythological aura is inseparable from the image of fields turning gold overnight and the air filling with the scent of blossoming mango trees, and court records from the Mughal era confirm it was performed at seasonal celebrations where emperors and their courts welcomed the change of seasons.

Musically, Basant is a rare Audav-Sampoorna raga in the Purvi thaat that pairs teevra Ma (the augmented fourth) with both komal Ga and komal Ni, creating an archaic, hieratic modal color unlike any other spring raga.

The ascending line leaps dramatically from Ga to teevra Ma*, bypassing Re and Dha, producing phrases that feel like sudden bursts of blossoming—exuberant and irreversible.

Ustad Amir Khan and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi both gave transcendent recordings in late Basant Panchami concerts, their slow exploratory alaaps treating the raga with the gravity it deserves.

The Bollywood composition 'Aaj Re Basant Aayo' from the 1950s brought Basant's characteristic teevra Ma to film audiences, demonstrating how its festive archaic character translates even to popular song.
