Notable Compositions
Raga attributions for film songs, ghazals, and semi-classical pieces are often disputed. Composers may draw from a raga without strictly adhering to it. Treat these as approximate — we show a confidence indicator on each entry.

Bageshri · 11 compositions
Bageshri is a night raga associated with pining and longing. It has a sweet, melancholic quality and is often associated with the image of a woman waiting for her beloved.
Legend & Lore
Raga Bageshri is one of the great night ragas of Hindustani classical music, its very name believed to derive from 'Vagishwari' — an epithet of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of music and learning — lending it a feminine, quietly sacred quality even as its dominant emotion is the secular ache of viraha, the pain of romantic separation.
Classical Ragamala paintings depict a nayika (heroine) standing on a dark rooftop, lantern in hand, straining to see a figure that never arrives — an image that crystallises the raga's emotional world with unerring accuracy.
Musically, Bageshri belongs to the Kafi thaat and employs an asymmetric scale: it ascends without Re and Dha, then descends with all seven swaras including the characteristic komal Ga and komal Ni, creating a melodic arc that reaches upward with restraint and falls back with slow, ornamental richness.
The vadi Ma dominates the raga's gravitational centre, drawing every phrase back to it like a tide returning to shore, while the characteristic meend (glide) between Ga and Ma is the sonic gesture of longing that defines Bageshri above all others.
It has been immortalised by Ustad Amir Khan's profoundly inward recordings, by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's expansive Khayal renditions, and above all by Begum Akhtar, whose ghazal and Thumri interpretations — including the iconic 'Piya Bin Naahi Aavat Chain' — set an emotional standard that has never been surpassed.
Its influence extends into Hindi cinema as well: the song 'Aayo Kaahan Se Ghanshyam' from the bhajan tradition and multiple film compositions across Hindi and Marathi cinema draw on Bageshri's moonlit atmosphere.

Key distinctions that set Bageshri apart from similar raags
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raag using komal Ga and Ni like Bageshri, but its vadi is Pa and it has a brighter, more expansive feel. Bageshri's vadi is Ma with an introspective, late-night character.
Kafi is the parent thaat of both, but Kafi itself is more folk-inflected and uses all seven swaras freely. Bageshri is more refined, with specific vakra (zigzag) movements and an omission of Re in ascent.
