Adana is a powerful night raga from the Kanada family, closely related to Darbari Kanada but sung at a faster tempo. It conveys energy and vigour.

Legend & Lore

Adana is one of the most powerful ragas in the Hindustani canon, a member of the venerable Kanada family whose lineage is traced to the legendary court musician Miyan Tansen, the jewel of Emperor Akbar's court who is said to have established many of the Kanada family's essential melodic forms.

While its cousin Darbari Kanada moves with slow imperial grandeur — its deep meends (glides) and deliberate tempo befitting the royal darbar (court) — Adana is its more vigorous, swift, and dramatically intense counterpart, sung in the late-night hours with an energy that converts the same dark Asavari-thaat notes into something fierce and heroic rather than grave and introspective.

The raga employs komal Gandhar, komal Dhaivat, and komal Nishad from the Asavari thaat, and these three flattened notes in a night context create a darkly expressive palette that skilled performers charge with veera (heroic) and raudra (fierce) emotional energy — a combination of rasas rarely found together in the classical canon, making Adana one of the most emotionally distinctive of all Hindustani ragas.

The characteristic andolan (oscillating vibrato) on komal Ga and komal Dha is the raga's most identifiable ornamental feature, and in the hands of masters it creates a quality of trembling intensity like a warrior's voice in the moment before battle.

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's recordings of Adana remain unmatched in their combination of technical virtuosity and raw emotional power — his taans (fast melodic runs) in Adana are legendary for their speed and precision — and Ustad Faiyaz Khan was similarly celebrated for his commanding renditions.

The raga has also been used memorably in film music: the composition 'Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj' in the film Baiju Bawra uses Adana's characteristic phrases to create a mood of intense longing and spiritual anguish.
